The notion of a Raag is at the foundation of Indian Classical Music. Simply put, a Raag uniquely defines a set of musical notes and their allowed arrangements to form a melody to evoke a certain mood.🌹🌹🌹🌹

The principles that characterise each raag are the Aaroh, Avroh, Vadi, Samvadi, Jati, Nyaas swars, Samay, and Pakad. This foundation allows for infinite improvisation but also places restrictions on a raag. 🌹🌹🌹

How little of every note in the Raag should be used in phrases to stay compliant with the Raag and to show the beauty of the raag. Alpatva and Bahutva are the terms used to describe the dominance or the lack of it for each note in the Raag. 🌹

While presenting a raag, the act of showing or noticing another similar raag is known as Tirobhaav of the current raag. After a Tirobhaav, the act of making the original raag very apparent is called an Avirbhaav of the raag. 🌹🌹

In Sanskrit, a Raag means “something that colors your mind.” Within Indian classical musical systems, a Raag has the power to create very specific emotions in one’s mind. 🌹🌹🌹🌹

Some Raags are seasonal; they enhance the listener's mood through association with a particular season, such as spring or monsoon. 🌹 🌹🌹 🌹 🌹

Ancient scriptures define a Raag as a composition of sounds capable of bringing joy to the human heart while attaining beauty through specific movements of notes and phrases. 🌹 🌹

Indian Classical music is a very ancient art form. It has transformed over centuries due to various influences. And in every generation scholars have made invaluable contributions in analyzing and documenting the system of Raags. 🌹 🌹🌹🌹🌹

There were reportedly 4,840 Raags in India's classical music system at one stage. Being largely an oral heritage, this art form is difficult to define in a textual style. *दिपावली के शुभ पर्व की आप सभी को मंगलमय शुभकामनाएं*.

Harmonic relationships are given priority over notes to be performed in Western classical systems. This is one way that "on the notes" may be used to describe the music. *जागतिक संगीत के कुछ अंश प्रस्तुत है*.

The most important note in a Raag is called the Vadi. The beauty of the raag lies in weaving the Vadi note in various phrases frequently or by resting on it frequently. The Vadi note also distinguishes the raag from other raags that have the same notes. 🌹🌹

Anuvadi - Aside from Vadi and Samvadi notes , all the other notes in the Raag are known as Anuvadi. These are supporting notes necessary to make phrases in a raag. *धृपद गायन एक समृद्ध परंपरा*. 🌹 🌹🌹🌹

The *Vivadi* note is the one that is not present in the Aroh-Avroh, but certain raags permit the use of certain notes to add to the beauty of the raag. A raag doesn’t give complete freedom to use any note in any manner as a vivadi swar. 🌹🌹

A varjit note must never be used when singing or playing a Raag. All notes other than the Vadi, Samvadi, Anuvadi and Vivadi are known as varjit swars. They will destroy the beauty of the raag if used accidentally. 🌹🌹

Pakad is a signature phrase of the raag that brings out the beauty in the raag and it also uniquely identifies the raag. Pakad means hold and the pakad gives a good hold on the raag. It can be compared to the face of the raag. 🌹

Nyaas swars - These are notes that should be rested on. Phrases in the raag should be created in such a way that they end  with Nyaas swars. The vadi tends to be one of the nyaas swars, however some anuvadi swars are also designated as nyaas swars. 🌹 🌹

Samay means the time of the day when the raag should be sung or played at. Every raag creates a unique mood due to the unique combination of notes in it. Every raag also has an inherent tempo and a personality. A combination of all these factors makes the raag sound best at a certain time.
