Ghazal.

Ghazal.
First ghazal I heard on radio by Gulam Ali and I was teenager that time. I had attraction towards music since childhood. Those days if any one is singing at any place at any time, I use to find out the place and enjoy the music in the city.Gulam Ali and his classic compositions like Aapni tasvir ko aankho se, dayaa re dil ki raat me, Gaye dinokaa surag leke and many more were my favorite.Ghazal was at its pick in 80s to mid 90s.There was no other music in the market, every where there was buzz of it. Every city there were pack concerts of ghazals by Mehadi Hassan,Gulam Ali,Jagjit Sing,Pankaj Udaas,Rajendra & Nina Mehata ,Anup Jalota and more. I do not want to miss two names Begam Akhatar and Farida khanum are the best of all time though there time period was different.
I was interested more in its melody part rather than lyrics. That is why Gulam Ali’s compositions were my first choice. Tough to sing because it has composed in such a manner(Bahot kasrat hoti hai) difficult combination of notes, used more than one raga for a ghazal, small tana(murki, khatka) has been used very often. That is why it sounds extraordinary, excptional, classic, melodious. There was time every one wanted to be Ghazal singer, big craze was going on up to mid 90s.Glamour,big money, over night star, to many opportunities every thing has disappeared just like that. I am sure it is not going to die. I hope that the days will come back again. Same thing happened with the old film songs, they are back in the form of remix.Ghazals will be back in some or the other form.

My Kind of Town.

My Kind of Town.
I would never forget my every day evening walk by the Elliot bay for one-hour in Seattle Washington for years. Seattle is always cloudy and wet. City is a big part of my life for big time, walking in the downtown every day, visiting the library spending some time there. Seattle Center is one of the well-known spot with Space Needle and science center. Space needle is unique; it has a restaurant in the space on the top of the needle. Seattle center has all kind of entertainment, shopping center, dance floors, auditorium, and community centers.
Every day there is some thing or the other on the bord. There will be no day without festive activity. Music concert series, world music festival, community celebrations, food festival and lot more. That is the only place, around the year some day chinies, Filipino, Indian, Freanch and more community festivals. Place is always busy. Workshops on theater.music, folk art and more…..Exhibition of panting.sclpture, dramas, promotaional activities, you just name it. Native American (Red Indian} festival is special attraction. Open-air Rock concerts in the summer are great fun by colorful fountain. Place is always busy with lots of activities. Very much entertaining.
In the downtown Fish and vegetable market is also very busy and crowded. Interesting thing is street musicians playing on the street good music and make their living on that, whatever they get as a tip through out the day. I never missed to listen to this musician whenever I had time. Just next to the market by the bay, there is Horse cart ride, of course better than our Tangas. Some relief in the super fast life style of America.
One of the best restaurants of Seattle is Indian, by name Chatnay ranked no. one for many years for its test, service and more, mostely Americans eat there.
I would like to mention one thing here about getting my driver licence. It is very tough job there. Written test I passed just like that on computer.Praticle was failed first time, though I had taken classes from driving school. I was bit nervous about it. Now see the Indian mentality how it works you go anywhere. I had a music student from Fiji. One day I told him that what to do man, about getting this licence, he said do not worry, I know licensing officer who is from Fiji. He fixed the appointment with him. One day early morning, we went for the test. There was big queue .He came out from the office and said stand in the queue all of you. He pointed at me said come here, asked to get in to the car, he also got in to the car and asked me turn left; I drove him for ten minutes.
Asked me…Aachhi tarahse chalaana jaanate ho Na, I said yes. In between I was little faster, he said… kya kar rahe ho,mujhe India le jao ge kya.I started laughing…That is how I got Licence.Let me tell you one thing here, I was good driver, no cheating. Fijians are mostly Indians. It is big population in Seattle. Ham log kahi bhi jayenge to bhi haamari aadat nahi jaayegi.Aadat se majbur Hai Na.
