Ghazal.

Ghazal.
First ghazal I heard on radio by Gulam Ali and I was teenager that time. I had attraction towards music since childhood. Those days if any one is singing at any place at any time, I use to find out the place and enjoy the music in the city.Gulam Ali and his classic compositions like Aapni tasvir ko aankho se, dayaa re dil ki raat me, Gaye dinokaa surag leke and many more were my favorite.Ghazal was at its pick in 80s to mid 90s.There was no other music in the market, every where there was buzz of it. Every city there were pack concerts of ghazals by Mehadi Hassan,Gulam Ali,Jagjit Sing,Pankaj Udaas,Rajendra & Nina Mehata ,Anup Jalota and more. I do not want to miss two names Begam Akhatar and Farida khanum are the best of all time though there time period was different.
I was interested more in its melody part rather than lyrics. That is why Gulam Ali’s compositions were my first choice. Tough to sing because it has composed in such a manner(Bahot kasrat hoti hai) difficult combination of notes, used more than one raga for a ghazal, small tana(murki, khatka) has been used very often. That is why it sounds extraordinary, excptional, classic, melodious. There was time every one wanted to be Ghazal singer, big craze was going on up to mid 90s.Glamour,big money, over night star, to many opportunities every thing has disappeared just like that. I am sure it is not going to die. I hope that the days will come back again. Same thing happened with the old film songs, they are back in the form of remix.Ghazals will be back in some or the other form.
